Who can apply to be in BUMP? When do I apply?
Current students can apply the summer before their Third-Year to be a BUMP mentee and the summer before their Fourth-Year to be a BUMP mentor. Applications are annual and usually due before the Third-Year Batten Orientation in August/September.
Which application should I fill out?
Current Third-Years fill out the "Mentee" application.
Current Fourth-Years fill out the "Mentor" application.
How are buddies matched? What if I don't like my buddy?
The BUC Internal Committee uses students' application responses to match buddies with people they will have something in common with. While we do our best to create compatible pairs, please keep in mind that we are not always able to make perfect matches. Should you and your buddy not get along for some reason, or if your buddy is unresponsive, please feel free to reach out to the BUC Internal Committee and we will gladly help you resolve the issue or rematch you if necessary.
What does BUMP do during the year?
BUMP hosts monthly academic and social events for BUMP buddies. Academic events include policy roundtable discussions, community service, and study breaks, while social events include outdoor activities, outings into Charlottesville, and evening festivities.
What would the commitment be like?
BUMP buddies are strongly encouraged, though not required, to attend all BUMP events. In between events, we ask that BUMP buddies keep in touch with each other, and we require mentors to make a special effort to proactively check-in with their mentees periodically and to be responsive should their mentee have questions or want to meet up.
Do BUMP participants get any special privileges?
Yes! In addition to the honorable title of BUMP participant, BUMP buddies will have the opportunity to attend fun events only open to the program, and to get free food and fashionable BUMP merchandise.
Can I request a BUMP buddy?
If you feel very strongly about being matched to someone in particular, you may request a buddy. However, please remember that this is an opportunity to get to know new people who you may not have been friends with before, and thus we do not encourage requests.
How can I get involved in running BUMP?
If you are interested in running BUMP, you should apply for the BUC Internal Committee when the BUC application process occurs. Additionally, you might also contact the current Internal Committee Chair to see if there are any openings on the Committee to help specifically with BUMP.
